Letting the Train take the Strain

Posted by Cool Your Jets IV on June 27, 2011

For the second time now, we say cheerio to Bangkok only this time we’re heading north to Chiang Mai rather than south – we’ve done beaches and now need more culture and things to see and do. Chiang Mai is Thailand’s fifth largest city and is surrounded by mountains with lots to see and do in the local area, I think we’re here for a good few weeks before moving into Laos.

As ever, we took the train from Bangkok – our favourite seat; 2nd class A/C sleeper! It takes about 13 hours to Chiang Mai and it really is a great way to travel, it’s cheap too. Yesterday being elections meant there was no alcohol anywhere, the night before we’d been kicked out of a bar due to the elections! However, like most areas surrounding train stations (being dodgy,) we managed to ‘source’ several beers and a couple of bottles of rum – it certainly makes for a more pleasant journey!

The couple of sleeping pills would have done the trick if we hadn’t fallen asleep at 8.30pm in our drunken stupor!

Lovely photos as usual Craig. Are you still thinking about getting an SLR?

    • Cheers Rich – on the way other we had a 12 hour stopover in Hong Kong where I saw a lovely Canon, half the price of UK (was £500, rather than a £1000) I was so close to buying though assumed it would be cheaper at the A/P – kicking myself I didn’t grab it! A mate is Singapore currently and is looking for me…
